Spituk (3307 meters or 10,852 feet)- Phyang are in the notable places as the name suggests with a monastery at each place by the same name! Both situated in Leh, with Spituk just 8 kms away and Phyang at 15-16 kms awat from Leh town. Spituk dates back to the 11th century whereas the history of phyang goes back to the starting of the 16th century.. Spituk monastery follows the Gelug school of tibetan buddhism where as the Phyang monastery follows the Drikung Kagyu school of buddhism.
Phyang, also called Fiang founded by Chosje Dharma Kunga Takpa, established in 1515 through a monastic community first established by the Digung teachings in Ladakh. Also houses a 900 years old museum with idols, kashmiri bronzes dating back to the 14th century, thangkas, chinese and tibetan, mongolian firearms and weapons. Follows the Drikung Kagyu lineage. Spituk with the Spituk Gompa, or Pethuk Gompa, site first blesses by Arhat Nyingmagung. Founded by Od-de, elder to Lha Lama Chungchub Od when he came to Maryul in 14th century. When Lhotsewa Rainchen Zangpo ( translator) came, he said that an exemplary religious community would arise.
